How a Food Metal Detector Works
The balanced coil field
Inside the detector head, a transmitter coil driven at high frequency sits between two receiver coils wound in opposition. With nothing in the aperture, the voltages induced in the two receivers cancel exactly, producing a null signal. This balanced-coil arrangement is the core of the working principle: the detector is not measuring a field strength but listening for any disturbance to a precisely balanced state.
Disturbance and phase discrimination
When product passes through, both the product and any metal in it disturb the field. Conductive and magnetic materials shift the signal in characteristically different phase angles: ferrous metal is magnetic and conductive, non-ferrous metal conductive only, and wet or salty products produce their own product effect. The detector learns the product's baseline signal so that genuine metal stands out against it.
Detection and classification
The controller continuously compares the received signal against the learned product envelope. A disturbance exceeding the threshold is classified as metal, and sensitivity settings determine how small a disturbance triggers detection. Ratings are stated per metal type because each behaves differently: on the MQ-MD-C at a 100 mm aperture, that is Φ0.6 mm ferrous, Φ1.2 mm non-ferrous, and Φ1.2 mm stainless steel.
Alarm and rejection
On detection, the standard response is an immediate belt stop with audible and visual alarm, so the contaminated pack can be removed and quarantined. With an optional reject mechanism, push rod, slide, or air jet depending on pack format, the machine diverts the pack automatically and keeps running. The gravity-fall MQ-MC separator instead fires a pneumatic flap within an adjustable 0.3-5 s window to divert contaminated powder from the product stream.

Set metal detector sensitivity to the smallest test-piece size the machine can detect reliably at the center of the aperture with your actual product running, not the best number in the brochure. Sensitivity is always worst at the aperture's geometric center and degrades as aperture size grows: the MQ-MD-C detects Φ0.6 mm ferrous at a 100 mm aperture but Φ3.0 mm at 400 mm, so choose the smallest aperture your product physically passes through. Wet, salty, or chilled products create product effect that forces a coarser setting; the detector must first learn the product so its baseline signal is compensated. Over-tightening sensitivity beyond stable limits causes false rejects, which erode operator trust and waste good product, so validated, repeatable settings beat aggressive ones.
What test pieces are used to verify a food metal detector?+
Use controlled and identifiable ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless-steel test pieces in or on a representative product. Challenge the least favourable validated position and confirm both detection and physical rejection.
