Checkweigher Reject Systems: Air Blast, Pusher, Flap, Arm, Wheel or Stop Alarm

Published · By Engineer Cai, Guangdong Miqi M&E Technology Co., Ltd.

The best checkweigher rejector is the one that removes the real product reliably at the real speed. Compare six mechanisms by product mass, stability, line rate, available air, hygiene and fail-safe confirmation requirements.

A checkweigher with rejector needs more than a fast actuator. The control system must track the failed pack from the weigh belt to the reject point, fire within a safe timing window and confirm that the pack entered a secure reject path. Product behaviour—not keyword popularity—decides which mechanism is suitable.

Six common reject methods

Reject mechanism selection
MethodOften suitable forMain limitation to test
Air blastVery light, stable packs at high rateNeeds clean dry air; weak on heavy or porous products
PusherCartons, trays and rigid packsSide impact and reset time
Drop flapSmall packs that can fall safelyVertical clearance and downstream recovery
Swing arm / diverterBags, cartons and moderate-to-heavy packsRequired lateral space and product stability
Swing wheelParcel and carton routingContact area, wheel timing and line layout
Stop + alarmLarge, fragile or manually reviewed itemsStops production and depends on operator response

Calculate the reject timing window

The controller normally uses conveyor speed and the distance from the weight decision point to the reject point. Speed changes, product length and transfer slip alter the timing window. Commissioning should challenge consecutive packs and the smallest permitted gap, not only isolated failures. A correct decision with incorrect tracking is still a failed system.

Fail-safe features to specify

  • Reject confirmation sensor at the physical reject path.
  • Full-bin or bin-present monitoring where rejected product is secured.
  • Air-pressure monitoring for pneumatic devices.
  • Alarm or line stop after a failed reject confirmation.
  • Locked or controlled reject collection where the quality plan requires it.
  • Counters that distinguish weight failures, reject events and reject faults.

Product trials prevent expensive mistakes

A flexible pouch may fold around a pusher, a bottle may tip, a light sachet may flutter under an air blast and a heavy carton may require more lateral energy than expected. Test minimum and maximum product weights, all pack materials, wet or dusty conditions, and the fastest line speed. Video the reject from above and from the side so timing and recovery are visible.

A reject method shown as an option is not automatically suitable for every model and product. Final compatibility belongs in the approved project specification.

Frequently asked questions

Which checkweigher rejector is best for heavy cartons?+

A swing arm, swing wheel, powered diverter or stop-and-alarm arrangement is often more realistic than air blast, but carton mass, speed, friction and available lateral distance must be tested.

Does every checkweigher need automatic rejection?+

No. Some lines use an alarm, stop signal or manual review. The control method should match risk, throughput and the plant procedure.

What is reject confirmation?+

A sensor or monitored event verifies that the failed item actually entered the reject path. It detects cases where the decision was correct but the actuator, timing or product movement failed.

Can one rejector separate underweight and overweight products?+

It can remove both into one reject bin. Separate destinations require additional lanes or devices and project-specific tracking logic.
